Joining a sports team in college has a lot of perks.

Whether you want to improve your resume, make friends, or simply get in shape joining a sports team may be just the thing you’re looking for.

Not sure if it’s right for you?

Here are 5 reasons why joining a sports team will make your US college experience better.

 1.  You’ll Make Friends.

Let’s face it. Sweating it out on a field (with or without direct body contact) is a bonding experience. And what new college student doesn’t want to make friends? Tackle, lunge or sprint your way to a beautiful friendship by joining a sports team in college.

2. You’ll Get in Shape.

Those freshman 15 becoming a problem? No worries. Joining a sports team will help you shed the pounds and get into shape. Regardless of the sport, you’ll be sweating in uniform — something to brag about to the cutie in algebra while showing off your rock-hard abs.

3. You Can Be a Leader.

Have you always had great aspirations of leadership? Here’s your chance to step up to the plate (pun intended)! Most teams need a captain, right? That can be you! Just think about it … the admiration, the fanfare, the spotlight on extracurriculars on your resume … it could be glorious.

4. You’ll Be Less Stressed.

Everybody knows that exercise relieves stress. And when you join a sports team in college, the daily regimen of workouts will have you feeling better than ever. You’ll be better able to cope with stressful situations because you’ll be drinking less coffee, sleeping better and enjoying the rush of those endorphins.

5. You’ll Have Fun.

College involves tons of obligations. Writing papers, studying for exams, even taking those pesky required classes will be something you’re used to by your second year. But what are you doing just for fun? Joining a sports team in college can serve that very purpose.

Whatever your reason, joining a sports team, whether it be a varsity team or a just-for-fun intramural team, is a great idea for many students.

Just remember: If you keep a healthy balance between your schoolwork and your extracurriculars, eat your vegetables and keep an open mind, your US college experience will be unforgettable.

Intramural sports are one of the things I miss most about college – it was a great way to get some exercise and meet new people!
