Morning classes are valuable if you’re a rare breed of college student … the early bird!
Morning classes aren’t for everyone.
Let’s face it: Most college students prefer to get up around noon. In fact, I always went out of my way to schedule classes that started later in the day.
But whether you’re an early riser or a night owl, remember these things before committing to an early morning class.
The Pros of Morning Classes
I am definitely not a morning person, but even I have to admit that a.m. classes do have their benefits.
For one thing, it’s really nice to get your classes out of the way early. I ended up taking a slew of morning classes (starting at 8:30!) during one semester of college. While I didn’t love the early hours, I remember being pleasantly surprised by how much time I had to enjoy the rest of my day once I finished all of my classes by 11:30.
Another great thing I found about morning classes is that they tend to be smaller. That’s a big plus for students who prefer the intimacy of smaller college class sizes. Usually fewer students sign up for morning classes. This makes for more interactive and interesting lectures.
Are Morning Classes for You?
It’s one thing to simply wake up at 8 a.m. It’s a whole different story when you’re expected to be sitting in class, listening attentively, and taking notes! If you’re considering morning classes, be realistic about how attentive you are capable of being at a morning lecture.
One of the wonderful things about higher education is that you have a lot of freedom when it comes to choosing courses at college – both which ones you take and when you take them. Take advantage of this. Morning classes are often (though not always!) avoidable.
How to Survive Early Morning Classes
Odds are that you’ll end up taking at least one morning class in college.
You may be a natural early riser and simply choose to take early morning classes, or you may be a late sleeper who just can’t resist a particularly interesting class that happens to meet at 8:30 a.m. (as was my case). Or you may be forced to take a certain class that is offered only in the morning in order to meet your academic requirements.
Whatever the case, even the worst morning person can survive morning classes with a few simple tips. Try these pointers to make morning classes a breeze – or at least bearable:
Find Your Morning Wake-Up Routine
Whether it’s a hot shower, a workout, or a good breakfast, every person has his own wake-up routine. Some people can’t get up without listening to some pulse-pumping music. Figure out what works best for you.
Balance Your Schedule
If you’re taking morning classes, don’t exhaust yourself by overbooking your schedule. On days when you have to get up early for class, try to schedule fewer classes and activities so you have time to rest later. Also make sure your schedule allows you to get enough sleep the night before!
Take a Tape Recorder
Sometimes, even if you can get eight hours of sleep and perform your morning wake-up routine, you still may just be too hazy to focus during early morning classes.
Investing in a good tape recorder to record your early morning classes will allow you to go back later and listen again to parts of the lecture where you may have zoned out.
With these tips, even the latest of night owls can succeed in early morning classes.
