New York — January 28, 2014 — Above all, study abroad is about learning — at least that’s how University Language Services, a NY-based language service provider, feels about it.

ULS is giving college students an incentive to reflect on their study abroad experiences and what they learned by living in another culture. To do this, they are offering a $500 grand prize to the college student who best captures their learning experience in a photo and a 100-200 word description.

Two $100 prizes will also be awarded to entrants in second and third place.

The scholarship contest is open to all college students who have previously studied abroad, are currently studied abroad, or are registered to study abroad.

Specifically, students are asked to describe what they have learned from their experiences abroad, or, if they have not yet been abroad, they are asked to describe what they wish to learn.

Creativity is encouraged when choosing a subject for the photo: it could be the dish that made a student decide they needed to learn how to make pasta by hand in Italy; the Gaudi buildings that inspired an architecture student in Barcelona; or the Japanese temples that helped an international relations student truly understand another culture. Whatever the subject, students must be the ones behind the camera — only original photography is permitted.

The contest is held in five rounds. ULS selects eight entrants from each round to be semi-finalists, and then leaves it up to the public to decide who will become finalists. Voters get two weeks to pick the top three from each round.

Here are the important dates:
