Get Rewarded for Your Hobby with These Student Scholarships

unique college scholarshipsWhen people think of scholarships for college, they tend to think only in terms of academic and athletic scholarships. But did you know there are lots of scholarships available to high school students who take part in a variety of hobbies?

Whether you like to knock down pins at the bowling alley or enjoy relaxing in a comfy chair with your knitting needles, there’s probably a scholarship out there for you.

Scholarships for Student Gamers

Playing games just might finally pay off, if you play Magic: The Gathering, that is. If this is your game of choice and you’re pretty good at it, apply for the Gamers Helping Gamers Scholarship. High school seniors who apply have a chance to win $5,000 for college.

Another game that could help you win a scholarship for school is Pokémon. The Play! Pokémon Scholarship Program gives student scholarships to those among the winners in the Pokémon World Championships and the Pokémon TCG U.S. National Championships.

Certain schools also reward gamers. For example, Robert Morris University Illinois recently added eSports to its list of athletic teams. This means students can get scholarships for doing really well at video games like League of Legends.

Scholarships for Creative Students

If you’re good at design, you can enter the Geddes Creativity Scholarship Contest. Applicants are asked to submit fun designs that appeal to children. The winning design is then featured on the company’s products including folders, pencils and bookmarks. The winner of this scholarship also gets $1000, while the student who comes in second place gets $500 and third place gets $250.

If you’re good with your hands, you might have a shot at the Beans for Brains Scholarship program. Managed by Jimmy Beans Wool, this scholarship offers $3200 to the student who submits the most impressive sewing, knitting, or crocheting project.

The #NoFilter Scholarship Slam by Power Poetry rewards students who are good at poetry. If you submit an awesome poem, you have a chance to win $1000 to help pay for your tuition, books, college dorm and other expenses.

Scholarships Associated with Sports

Whether you’re on a bowling league or are just naturally good at this sport, the scholarships offered by the United States Bowling Congress might be right for you. Males can apply for the Chuck Hall Star of Tomorrow, while female bowlers are eligible for the Alberta E. Crow Star of Tomorrow. Both offer $6000 to the lucky winners.

Have a passion for sports, but don’t actually play for any teams? There’s scholarships for you, too! For example, the Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund offers scholarships to students in Massachusetts who have worked on a golf course for at least two years. This means caddies, pro shop workers, snack shop employees and anyone else who has worked on a golf course in this state are eligible.

Have you heard of any student scholarships that are associated with your favorite hobby?
