Sarah Hollenbeck: North Carolina State University

This picture is of the Free Expression Tunnel at North Carolina State University. This is a tunnel where anyone on campus can go to express his or herself through “legal graffiti”. This picture to me represents creative expression and the uniquely diverse environment that college provides. People come from across the country and even the world to attend a specific college. This creates a very diverse and culturally developed college experience for all of the students. Art is one of the very few things in the world that no two people do exactly the same. People have similar clothing styles, taste in food, cars, hair colors, and grades. However, no two people create art in the same way, and to me that is symbolic of the sundry college atmosphere. I will be attending N.C. State in the Fall and one of the reasons I chose that university is because of how strongly everyone there embraces difference and self-expression. To me, college is a time of self-discovery and a period of change. When I look at this picture I see the representations of so many personalities, memories, and changed lives. This to me represents a feeling of acceptance and unity.

This photo shows a handful of the 4.5 million books housed in The University of Chicago's Joseph Regenstein Library. Although the library was not the deciding factor in my attendance of The University of Chicago, the bookstacks were a stunning monument to the incredible intellectual fodder available at such an institution.
Lauren Glen: University of North Carolina at Asheville

This photo was taken on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Asheville. Looking for the perfect college has been and continues to be an extremely difficult process and I have come to realize that academics it just a fraction of what is important to me in the perfect school. Atmosphere. That is what this picture represents because a large part of what college means to me is atmosphere. It’s a different environment from that of my home or my high school and I want to find a school where I feel comfortable. Asheville has a very artsy and radical atmosphere which has appealed to me greatly and is a key factor in why Ashville is currently my top choice of colleges.

Karina Marquez-Robles: University of California, Santa Barbara

When I visited UCSB I felt the most wonderful thing about it was its beautiful scenery: its beach, mountains, lagoon. But instead of posting one of those photos and describing how its beautiful setting resembles the beauty that comes with college, I felt this picture epitomizes college for me because it represents what I believe should be the college experience: having fun, getting along with everyone - no matter race, income or any other factors - and just being yourself. Its hard to find a place where diversity ensues naturally and literally everyone gets along. I feel college promotes this great experience of diversity, at least most of the time, which is another reason college is so amazing. Sure college is mostly about studying or sports or whatever it is one plans to do in the future but one's years in college have also been quoted to be the best years of a lifetime. In following this quote I believe this picture exerts exactly what college stands for: happiness. Friends having a wonderful time together and friendships being created and the experiences that come with it I feel all help to achieve happiness, which should be the epitome of college.
