Carmen Damazio-Medeiros
Carmen Damazio-Medeiros praises her native land of Brazil, but she admires the education system in the US.
“Most of the students (in Brazil) don’t have the opportunities American kids have here,” said Damazio-Medeiros, now a Florida resident.
American students also receive more guidance, she said. In the US, students learn in high school and college what to expect from the careers they have chosen. She didn’t receive that kind of support when she was studying for a bachelor’s degree in social communication in Brazil.
She moved to the US in the mid-1990s, and a couple of years later began taking accounting classes. She works as an accounting specialist and is in the process of earning a bachelor’s degree from Florida International University.
But she didn’t return to school simply for a degree. She enjoys building her knowledge and applying what she has learned. Damazio-Medeiros writes in her essay:
“There is no limit to what one can accomplish living in a country that values the skills and dedication of each student and understands that each citizen’s success matters to the future of its nation.”
