Help for International Students on US Campuses
Where International Students Can Go for Help with Mental, Medical or Academic Problems
Help for international students who attend US colleges and universities is readily available and easy to find. Whether your trouble is as simple as missing a class or as serious as having thoughts of suicide, resources on campus can help you overcome your problems.
International students face challenges beyond the normal academic concerns of most of their classmates. International students are experiencing a new culture, and maybe a new language. They are far from their family and friends and may experience bouts of loneliness.
Take the time to learn what types of help your new university and community offers international students.
Counseling for International Students
Your university may have a counseling center or other psychological service on campus. International students can talk to a professional about concerns regarding school, your family or other problems.
These sessions may be one-on-one, or the center may offer group sessions so students can share their worries with one another. As a registered student, you may not have to pay a fee, but don’t let the cost prevent you from seeking the help you need.
Health Center
An illness or broken bone can happen in a foreign country just as easily as in your own country. Find out if your university has a health center, its location and its hours. Also find the location of your nearest hospital and keep its phone number accessible. International students should also keep in mind that they can dial 911 for emergencies.
International Office
Your college or university will probably have an office to provide help for international students who have come to the US and US students who wish to study abroad. The staff in this office will be able to answer your questions about student visas, American culture and academics – or at least be able to tell you who you can ask for help.
Students and Professors
Most of your professors and fellow students will be happy to provide help for international students regarding classes and culture. If you have trouble understanding a professor during a lecture, ask classmates if you can copy their notes. Make friends in your classes, at your college dorm or at the cafeteria, and they will be even more likely to fully answer your questions.
Professors often have office hours, when you can visit them at certain times each week if you have questions about their class. You can also check if your university provides tutoring in specific subjects.
Just remember: If you’re dealing with a serious issue, such as depression, don’t hesitate to visit the counseling center or ask the international office for resources to help you.
Help for international students comes in many forms at American colleges and universities. These resources can make your time in the United States more enjoyable, and ultimately more rewarding. However, if you continue to find yourself miserable, your decision to study in America is reversible. You can probably be home in a day or two.
