Students Find Benefits in US Schools & Schools Abroad

Students who have studied in the US and in another country say foreign schools often place more emphasis on teamwork than their American counterparts.

New York — January 29, 2009 — Students were asked to describe the differences between attending schools inside and outside of the US for an essay contest sponsored by University Language Services, a US-based translation company. Submissions came from students who have studied around the world.

Despite the differences they found in educational style, few students definitively stated that they preferred one to the other. Rather, they noted that the combination of both approaches helped them become more capable and well-rounded students.

The winner, SoRi Jang, found studying in both the US and Korea invaluable to her academic life. She wrote, “I am stronger and more independent than I ever was. I still cannot say I have found myself entirely, but I can say that I am on my way, with a good start.”

Following this great interest in University Language Services’ first annual essay contest, international students as well as US students who have studied abroad are invited to enter the second annual essay contest for a chance to win one of four scholarships.

Students may submit an essay of no more than 1,000 words answering the following question:

“When you arrived in the US after studying for two or more years in another country, what did you expect from your US college, university or high school? Have your expectations been met?”

One grand prize winner will earn a $500 scholarship. Three runners-up will receive $100.

Essays must be submitted by February 28, 2009. The submission form, contest rules and past winning entries are online at http://www.universitylanguage.com/scholarships/competition/.
