How to Make Friends in College

Whether you go to a large or small university, the prospect of making friends in college can be a bit daunting.

But fear not! With just a little bit of effort, you’ll be making friends in college in no time. There are plenty of places to meet people — just be a little creative, and follow these tips:

1. Join Clubs.

In college, you can find a club for just about anything. Check out the selection, and don’t be afraid to go to meetings by yourself! You may find classmates who are just as excited about Star Wars as you are, and make friends in college in the process! And did I mention that clubs are great extracurricular activities for your resume?

2. Join a Sports Team.

Whether you’re gaining a few pounds and want to slim down, stressed out and need an outlet for your frustration, or simply need a hand with making friends in college, joining a sports team can be the answer to your problem. All that sweat and team spirit are sure to inspire a friendship or two.

3. Go to Events.

You know how you periodically get handed random fliers about stuff that’s going on around campus? Instead of gritting your teeth and disposing of it in the nearest trash bin, read a little more carefully the next time! Campus events are a great way to make friends in college. Whether it’s a football game, a fundraiser or a poetry reading, there is likely free food and a big crowd. It’ll be like shooting fish in a barrel!

4. Go to Parties.

Though they may seem scary at first, college parties are probably one of the easiest ways to meet people and improve your social life. Loud music and drunk seniors aside, parties usually provide the laid back and social atmosphere it takes to approach new people. College is about having a good time (as well as getting your degree!), so loosen up and enjoy it!

5. Don’t Give Up!

Freshman year of college brings with it a lot of firsts for students. Especially if you’re going to a school far from home, you’ll probably have a slightly longer period of adjustment when it comes to making friends. But don’t give up! Getting to know people is a process, and if one thing doesn’t work out for you, try another! College has no shortage of social activities.

College isn’t just about burying your nose in books and making perfect grades. Social experiences shape who you are. So what are you waiting for? Get off your computer and start making friends in college!
