Want a job in the US?
International students must become comfortable talking about themselves and their talents in job interviews, says one career adviser with a special interest in working with international students.
Grace Kutney from Sweet Careers was born in the Philippines, raised in Canada and now works in the US, so she has a unique perspective on the skills that international students need to get a job in America.
Too often, international students are uncomfortable talking about themselves in a work interview or think it is inappropriate.
Don’t fall into this trap. US employers actually want you to explain how you can help the company or organization, Kutney says.
You can (and should) do this in your resume and cover letter. Being able to talk confidently about yourself, however, is even more important during a job interview.
Be able to explain what makes you the best candidate for the job. Speak about:
- Classes you have completed
- Special training you have received
- Any experience, internships or prior jobs you have had in this field.
Remember: Talking about yourself is appropriate not only in formal interviews, but also in more informal settings such as job fairs.

This is an excellent topic and one that could greatly change the experience of an international student here in the US. An internship or employment position is an obtainable goal for students and can greatly enrich their experience while in the US. They will gain greater exposure to different aspects of US culture and will also have the opportunity to earn a income that can offset the expensive nature of studying in the US. The below link is an organization that personally assists students in finding employment and touches upon many of the pitfalls that students experience while seeking employment as outlined in this article. http://www.htir.com. I hope this is a helpful resource to international students.

I agree with you 99% but wonder if you have really looked at the whole picture. DOn’t mean to be critical just food for thought.
