Your votes are in and the judges have made their decisions: we have our winners for the 2011 scholarship photo contest for students who have studied abroad — or will be studying abroad soon!
We received hundreds of entries – photos from all over the world of landscapes, people, architecture and nature that dazzle the eye with descriptions that melt the heart. If they don’t inspire you to study abroad, I don’t know what will!
We know it’s not easy to pick that one photo that represents why you wanted to study abroad, but this year’s submissions were extremely impressive. It was tough, but we narrowed it down.
University Language Services awarded a $500 college scholarship to the grand prize winner and $100 scholarships to the second and third place winners.
Click on a name of one of the winners below to see their photos and descriptions.
Congratulations to:
Alexia Beghi, Grand Prize Winner |

In addition, we’ll be profiling each of our three winners right here on our blog over the next few weeks, so stay tuned!
All the pictures and descriptions we received — including those from the nine entrants who were awarded honorable mentions — show us that beyond the beautiful scenery and delicious food, study abroad is about becoming a part of a different culture and society. It’s about appreciating the lifestyle and customs of a people, acknowledging differences, and understanding other people’s challenges as you come to understand your own.
Thank you to everyone who participated by entering, voting or both! Keep your eyes on our Twitter and Facebook pages for some of our other favorite photos that were submitted!
We’ll also be announcing our next scholarship contest soon, so keep following our blog, Twitter and Facebook pages!
