An already diverse US university has plans to become even more so.
Bloomberg reported last week that almost 3 percent of Ohio State undergraduates were from other countries, and Ohio State University President E. Gordon Gee wants to raise the number of international students to at least 8 percent.
Full disclosure: I am an Ohio State graduate and could talk all day about the benefits of attending one of the largest schools in the US. I also know that the university has a vibrant international presence.
- International student clubs are active.
- International student services is friendly and helpful.
- International food is easy to come by in the restaurants and stores just a short walk away.
Ohio State, located in the state capital of Columbus, already has one of the largest international populations in the country. With 4,259 international students, Ohio State was 14th among all US colleges and universities in 2007-2008, according to the Institute of International Education.
Doubling that number would have catapulted Ohio State over the number 1 school, the University of Southern California, which had 7,189 international students that year.
