If you’re in high school, fall might mean the start of the semester, but it also means it’s time to register for the SAT. Test dates tend to fall about a month after the registration deadline, so if you plan to take the test ASAP in October, you need to register by September.
More specific SAT test and registration dates follow, as do the rules you need to know if you have to register late. Please note that all of these dates are subject to change, so be sure to double-check them before you register.

Why Register as Soon as Possible?
Many students take the SAT more than once in order to try to improve their score. Attending one of the earliest SAT test dates will leave you plenty of time to retake it if necessary, whereas choosing one of the last dates of the year leaves you with fewer options.
In addition, if you are a high school senior, be sure to check with the colleges where you are applying to see if there is a cut-off date to when they will accept SAT scores.
Plus, you never know what will occur the night before your chosen SAT test date, causing you to miss it and have to reschedule. You could become sick, or you could oversleep, missing the test. If you wait until the last test date for the SAT, there is no room for error when it comes to getting to the testing center on time and being ready to take the exam.
No matter which SAT test date you choose, waiting until the last minute to register may cost you extra money. If you miss the SAT registration date by even a minute, you will have to pay a fee to register late. The same goes if you have to change the date or testing center location after you register.
Security Changes Require More Preparation
Remember that there will be new SAT and ACT security measures in place for the 2012 school year, so planning ahead is even more important than usual. When the new rules take effect, you will need to send in a photo of yourself once you choose the best SAT test date, so be sure to leave yourself enough time for this task when you register.
Additionally, you cannot simply show up and take the SAT on standby anymore. Due to the new rules, you now have to register your intent ahead of time, since you will not be permitted to take the test if your name is not on the roster.
This leaves fewer options for students who like to do things at the last minute. Of course, considering the impact this test can have on your future, you should not procrastinate when deciding on the best SAT test date for you!
