American Social Media for Students

If you are an international student who has not yet used American social media, you may be missing out. There are several platforms in the US that can make various aspects of college life easier, and they are all free to use.

Learn how to use some of the social media platforms the typical American student uses. Whether you’re searching for a job or just looking for something to do after class, here are some reasons to use American social media.

Learn More About Your School

Nearly every US college has a Facebook page, and current and prospective students are encouraged to check it out. This is where updates on upcoming events are posted, such as testing dates, homecoming dances and athletic games. Twitter may also be used for schools to post brief reminders and links to useful articles.

Therefore, getting involved in American social media can help you stay up-to-date with what’s going on at your school. You’ll know about opportunities to meet other students or even improve  your academic standing when you find out about educational events.

Socialize with Other Students

If you are looking for fun things to do in the American city you moved to, social media is a good place to start. Some students find it hard to make friends when they approach people face-to-face, but people may be more receptive to making new friends through social media.

If you are on a Facebook page for your college, you may end up in a discussion with other students, or you may simply “like” the same picture on the page. Either way, you can add these people as friends, helping you connect with Americans as an international student.

Even if not everyone accepts your friend request, the ones who do may be able to tell you what’s going on around town once you send them a message. For many American college students, social media is a great way to connect with both new and old friends.

If you simply let your new Facebook friends know you are looking to get to know the American social scene, they will likely be eager to meet with you at events around the city.

Use American Social Media to Get a Job

If you are trying to get a job in college, you can use LinkedIn to get started. It allows you to put up a profile about your education and experience, and then you can search and connect with professionals in the industry you are interested in.

You can continue to use LinkedIn after you graduate from college, since many jobs that require a degree are regularly posted on this American social media platform. Of course, you can also use Facebook for finding a job after college, since some companies have a page that they update with job opportunities.

An additional social media site that many Americans use during the job search is Twitter. Many companies post their job openings on this site, and you can easily use the search function to find positions that interest you. It is also wise to “follow” the companies you want to work for, as well as Twitter members who regularly compile and post job listings.

These American social media platforms all allow users to create a basic profile for free, so you have nothing to lose when you try out each site for help with your social life, school knowledge or job search.
